Pangea Foundation Launches Software to Support Traditionally Underrepresented Youth with AP® Potential

Pangea Foundation Software Offers Schools Clear Path to Guide Students through Successful AP Testing, and Ultimately on to College

San Diego, California - May 21, 2007 - Pangea Foundation today announced the launch of an Advanced Placement Web application that will help schools support traditionally underrepresented youth with Advanced Placement Program® potential. The Web application, branded Abilities4Edu™, offers schools a clear path to guide students through successful AP® testing, and ultimately on to college.

Abilities4Edu will be piloted by the San Diego Unified School District. The school district was recently awarded an Advanced Placement Incentive (API) grant by the United States Department of Education. Abilities4Edu will provide schools a Web-based platform for measuring program outcomes related to the API grant.

The goal of the API grant is to close the AP equity gap between economically disadvantaged and non-economically disadvantaged schools through a variety of professional development programs, supplemental student education opportunities, and parent outreach efforts to achieve the following outcomes: (1) AP Courses offered at disadvantaged schools will be equal in number to those offered at non-economically disadvantaged schools; (2) the percentage of students enrolled in one or more core AP courses at participating schools will equal that of non-economically disadvantaged schools; (3) the percentage of underrepresented students enrolled in one or more core AP courses at participating schools will increase to close the equity gap; and (4) the number of AP tests taken by and passed by low-income and underrepresented groups will increase to close the equity gap at participating schools.

The three-year grant will serve 13 high schools and their respective feeder middle schools. Over 2,500 unduplicated students will be served over the three-year grant period.
