Flint, Michigan – September 26,
2000 – On September 21st, President
Clinton visited Flint, Michigan as part of his
initiative to bridge the digital divide and create
digital opportunities for all Americans. The Flint,
Michigan tour highlighted the importance of ensuring
the accessibility and use of information technologies
for Americans with disabilities.
In an unprecedented move, President Clinton announced
the first of the Technology Opportunities Program’s
(TOP) Fiscal Year 2000 grants, to Pangea Foundation
of San Diego, California.
“The $270,000 grant from the U.S. Department
of Commerce is going to significantly help Pangea
Foundation develop Web-based technologies designed
to serve people with disabilities,” says
Kristin Berry, Founder and Executive Director
of the San Diego-based organization.
Dedicated to Pangea Foundation’s Abilities
Networks program, the funds will assist in the
creation of Web-based software applications that
will help to facilitate communication among organizations
that serve people with disabilities.
